2023 Nissan Altima vs 2023 Toyota Camry

When it comes to sedans at the lower end of the pricing spectrum, you don’t ever expect to get anything more than plain seats behind a subpar engine. That’s why it’s a real treat to see extra amenities like a sporty engine and upgraded seating in an affordable car. But which vehicle has more to offer while giving you great value? The Camry is decent, but there’s more to admire in the new 2023 Nissan Altima.

Performance

There are two distinct engines available for the new Altima. The standard is 2.5L with 188 horsepower, but you can easily amplify that by upgrading to the available 2.0L Turbo with a maximum of 248 horsepower. But what makes the Altima a Nissan is the sporty design with driving enhancements such as Intelligent Trace Control and Active Ride Control, both features being a clear demonstration of what Nissan is capable of. Active Ride Control automatically adjusts the distribution of power for smooth braking, and Intelligent Trace Control offers an intuitive torque vectoring experience.

The Camry also offers two different engine options with the standard being a 2.5L which ranges from 176-206 horsepower depending on the exact trim you’re looking at. The upgraded engine is a 3.5L with a maximum of 301 horsepower, both options having the capacity to put out more than the Altima. However, the Camry is still overshadowed by the Altima with its additional driving features, in which case the Camry hardly has any to flaunt. That’s why we’ll still go with the Altima for a more fluid and unique driving experience.

Safety Features

It comes as no surprise that the new Altima comes standard with Safety Shield 360 which comes with all of your essentials. Automatic braking, lane assistance, blind-spot monitoring, automatic high beams, and other various warning and alert systems make the Altima a reliable sedan on top of being affordable. You can also increase your arsenal if you’d like, with available safety and driver-assist features like traffic sign recognition, semi-autonomous highway driving, ProPILOT Assist, and a 360-degree camera. With all of this tech combined, the Nissan Altima is ready for pretty much anything!

Toyota Safety Sense may come standard in the new Camry, but that’s about all she wrote. You can rest assured that the Camry will watch out for you with various warning systems and alerts, but there’s nothing really “Toyota” about any of the features that are available. The Altima has ProPILOT Assist which offers intuitive adaptability and is unique to Nissan, and the semi-autonomous driving isn’t something that you see every day. Next time, we can only hope that Toyota will step up to the plate instead of just settling for the bare minimum.

Interior

Nissan just keeps on giving with a stylish interior for the Altima complete with contrast stitching and Zero Gravity front seats. This special chair design is crafted to reduce the fatigue that is often followed by long road trips, making even the furthest destination feel like a breeze. You can use up to 15.4 cubic feet of cargo space to pack up luggage for your trips. By upgrading to the Altima SL or SR trim, you can even surround yourself with more modern tech like a 12.3-inch infotainment touchscreen, a wireless charging pad, and wireless Apple CarPlay integration. This is much more than what we would expect from a low-priced sedan, but we’ll gladly take it!

The Camry does what it can to provide a sense of luxury for a low-priced sedan so you feel like you’re getting a better value, but it’s not enough to actually feel like it’s worthwhile. There might be leather trimming and ambient lighting, but there’s nothing that actually proves to be functional for a better cabin experience. The 4.2-inch driver display is much too small to view comfortably (or safely) and the infotainment screen only goes up to 9 inches. So when it comes to fun, comfort, and accessibility, we’ll gladly hand it over to the Altima.

Bottom Line

After knowing everything there is to know about the new Altima and Camry, it’s easy to see that the Altima gives you more bang for your buck. But to really hammer in the value that you’re getting, we’ll break down the starting prices. The 2023 Nissan Altima starts at around $25,290 while the 2023 Toyota Camry starts at around $26,320. No one wants to pay more for a lesser experience which is why we think the choice to go with the new Altima is a no-brainer!
