2023 Nissan Versa vs 2023 Kia Rio

The new Versa and Rio are almost identical in many ways. They have very similar powertrains, and they even look the same aside from the badging. And while they share similar safety and interior technologies, you’ll notice that the Versa offers more bang for your buck with extra features.

Performance

The 2023 Versa has a decent 1.6L engine that supports up to 122 horsepower. Many people like it for the amazing fuel economy of 32 in-city and 40 highway miles per gallon, but you also get to experience Acura’s advanced Xtronic CVT system which is a nice step up from your average automatic transmission. The Versa is also fairly unique in that you could choose the more affordable 5-speed manual transmission if that’s more your style. The Versa also offers responsive steering and a rigid chassis for a nice touch of performance.

When we say that the Versa and Rio are similar in some aspects, we really mean it. The new 2023 Kia Rio also has a 1.6L engine just like the Versa, it just has a slightly lower 120 horsepower. The MPG rating is very identical with 32 in-city and 41 highway miles per gallon. Rather than an Xtronic CVT, the Rio comes equipped with an IVT system which is basically Kia’s version of an advanced automatic transmission. As you can see, both sedans are practically neck-and-neck. However, you’ll start seeing the major differences when reviewing the safety features and interior layout.

Safety Features

You can rest assured that the new Versa has you covered with the standard Nissan Safety Shield 360 package with the following safety and driver-assist features:

In the Kia Rio, you get the bare minimum when it comes to standard safety and driver-assist features. This includes Auto Emergency Braking Technology w/ Pedestrian Detection, Lane Keeping & Following Assist Technology, and High Beam Assist. Other than being short on the number of features, the Rio is only equipped with 6 total airbags compared to the Versa’s 10. Airbags definitely count under the phrase, “the more, the better”. In which case, the Versa wins this point.

Interior

You’ll already find a comfortable cabin in the base version of the new Versa, but Nissan also left you room for flexibility in altering your space. Available features include an Automatic Temperature Control system, heated Zero Gravity seats, and an intuitive Advanced Drive-Assist Display that you can use to view all of your crucial data with ease. The best part? The price differences between the base S trim and the higher SV and SR trims are minuscule, meaning that you can have many of these additional features without having to pay that much more.

The new Rio basically comes as-is with not a lot going on in comparison. You get regular plush seating with not many options to dress up the interior like you can in the Versa. The Rio also has an 8-inch infotainment screen like the Versa, but the driver display is a different story. While the Versa has an advanced instrument cluster, the Rio has a much smaller and less interesting 4.2-inch driver display which isn’t large enough to show everything you need with ease.

Bottom Line

At first glance, the new Versa and Rio both seem like your average low-cost sedan. But after getting into the finer details, that’s only true for the Rio. The new 2023 Nissan Versa, on the other hand, offers a more fulfilling experience while staying at an affordable price which makes it a greater value.
