In this particular area, Nissan and Ford have had it in the bag for decades. But who did it better for the 2025 model year? If cost and convenience are your goals, you’ll find that the 2025 Nissan Frontier is much more practical. Read on to see what we mean:

Performance

For 2025, the Nissan Frontier will sport a 3.8L V6 standard with up to 310 horsepower and 281 lb-ft of torque. Buyers will have the option to go with an all-wheel drive version with more details to come. What we do know is that the Frontier will have a payload capacity of 1,620 pounds and can tow up to 6,640. That’s pretty impressive for a midsized, if you ask us. We also love the 9-speed auto transmission for a seamless driving experience. The 2024 Frontier had a fuel rating of 18/24 MPG, but we expect that to improve for the 2025 version. So far, it’s looking like the Frontier will be an excellent choice for someone who wants to tread the pickup truck lifestyle in a smaller and more affordable ride.

The standard engine for the 2025 Ford Ranger is a 2.3L 4-cylinder with 270 horsepower and 310 lb-ft of torque. That’s 40 horsepower less than what the Frontier offers. But don’t worry, the Ranger Raptor model is here to turn the tide with a 3.0L V6 with up to 405 HP! The catch? Well, you’ll most likely have to pay an extra $20k for the Raptor. Do we feel like that’s worth the price? Absolutely not. And if you want any of the nice off-roading features like a tuned suspension, curated drive modes, skid plates, and an electronic-locking rear differential, you’ll have to shell out even more for the FX4 Off-Road Package. The $34k starting price seems like a ruse, with the real price hidden behind extra fees. Without the add-ons, the plain base model has nothing going for it.

Safety Features

The safety features for the 2025 Frontier have yet to be announced, but it’s easy to speculate. Automatic Emergency Braking will continue to be the standard as it’s the main feature that people look forward to in the Safety Shield 360 package. It’s easy to make mistakes, and those little mistakes shouldn’t cost you dearly. Automatic braking is always nice to have as an effective preventive measure, and with Nissan, you can guarantee that it will be included in all new models. Not only that but there’s a good chance that driver-assist features that were optional in the 2024 Frontier may be standard in the 2025 Frontier. With Ford, it’s hard to tell what features will be available in their upcoming models and which ones will be standard. Right now, automatic braking, lane departure, and auto high beams are standard, but that can be subject to change. We’ll have to wait and see the final verdict, but Nissan Safety Shield 360 has never let us down in the past.

Interior

As of 2024, the Nissan Frontier has ample legroom and cargo space. The dimensions are likely to stay the same to maintain the compact appeal. A significant change that we can expect is a dashboard redesign. While there’s something satisfying about the clean, open, minimalist approach, we could just as easily imagine a revamped design that highlights the Frontier’s best features in the best way possible. This truck already has a crisp, clear 8-inch infotainment screen with an available 9-inch upgrade and a 10-speaker Fender add-on. That’s already fantastic, and it’ll only get better from here!

Everything that is great about the Ranger’s cabin is, of course, only available in the Lariat or Raptor which can be anywhere from $10-$20k more. This includes bolstered seats, heated features, leather trim, dual-zone automatic climate control, and more. While these features are nice to have, we find value in what is given from the start, and the Ranger has nothing worthy of offering that doesn’t have an additional price tag attached to it.

Bottom Line

People look to mid-size pickups for something powerful yet practical, not to overpay and show off. The 2025 Nissan Frontier offers everything you need in a pickup at incredible value at a reasonable price, making it a smart investment for years to come. The Ford Ranger serves as a testament to how much you’re willing to shell out, which can easily lead to buyer’s remorse when you realize you could have gotten a capable pickup for less.
