The 2022 Nissan Rogue’s Three-Cylinder Engine

Nissan’s long been known for its continuing commitment to innovation, constantly pushing the limits in terms of power and performance across its entire line of vehicles. The 2022 Nissan Rogue , which was completely redesigned for the 2021 model year, showcases one of the automaker’s latest and greatest achievements—an impressive turbocharged three-cylinder 1.5-liter engine with variable-compression ratio tech. Here’s how this all-new engine stacks up against the competition.
Three Cylinders Can Pack a Powerful Punch
Nissan chose to elevate the 2022 Nissan Rogue over the 2021 model—and competing models in its class-by swapping out the previous 2.5-liter inline-four engine with a turbocharged three-cylinder. Despite its smaller size, the three-cylinder delivers even more power than its predecessor, producing 201 hp and 225 lb.-ft of torque compared with the 2.5-liter’s 181 hp and 181 lb.-ft. That’s a big difference, and now the Rogue can hit 60 mph in a class-competitive 7.7 seconds.
The release of this all-new engine coincides with the introduction of Nissan’s latest CVT, or continuously variable automatic transmission. Featuring a twin oil pump system, a 17%-wider gear-ratio spread, and reduced friction, the latest CVT improves both shift responsiveness and fuel economy.
These changes are significant, giving the Rogue some extra pep without sacrificing fuel economy. The 2022 Rogue is estimated to earn up to 33mpg in combined city and highway driving. The competition doesn’t even come close, with rivals like the Honda CR-V and the Toyota RAV4 topping out at just 30 mpg combined. What’s more, the three-cylinder engine doesn’t deliver any of the choppiness or shuddering you’ll find with competing engines. It won’t surge or sag like larger four-cylinder engines. Overall, the 2022 Rogue’s powertrain is impressive, leaving the competition in the dust.
What Else Makes the 2022 Rogue So Great?
Aside from its powerful, efficient powertrain, the 2022 Rogue is a cut above the competition in a variety of ways. It has more front headroom and rear legroom compared to the CR-V and the RAV4. It also includes some impressive available features that aren’t available in either the CR-V or the RAV4, regardless of what trim level you choose. They include:
- Available Intelligent Around View® Monitor
- Head-Up Display
- Blind Spot Intervention
Another critical safety feature—Rear Automatic Braking—comes standard in every 2022 Nissan Rogue. While this feature is available, but not standard, in the RAV4, it’s not even an option with the CR-V. When it comes to safety and driver-assistance tech, the choice is clear—the Rogue has the competition beat.

The 2022 Nissan Rogue has the competition beat in so many ways.
